Surfers Against Sewage has been protecting the UK’s marine environment, rivers and natural places for 32 years. One of our greatest strengths is making environmental conservation an exciting activity for young people, families and communities to become involved with – after all, a thriving ocean means thriving people.

Grants and Pledges from our grant-making supporters have helped us achieve some hugely important outcomes, from the development of our Plastic Free Schools education programme (now reaching over 1.4 million students) to supporting our Plastic Free Communities, to registering Designated Bathing Waters (creating accountability for the abysmal water quality in the UKs waterways) and funding the Million Mile Clean (which engages over 100,000 people in conservation activities).

With your support, we aim to save the ocean by delivering our ambitious, impactful national programmes and empowering communities to be the voice of the ocean. We are still a grassroots charity delivering big impact. We work hard to build a diverse range of funding sources and to secure project-based funding, but unrestricted funding from small trusts and foundations remains critical to Surfers Against Sewage. Without small-to-medium grants we wouldn’t be able to deliver the scale of impact for marine environments and communities across the UK.

We understand that certain projects resonate more with funders, or that grant conditions require funds to be aligned to project delivery. Our team delivers a range of engaging programmes across our core areas of water quality, plastic pollution, ocean recovery and the climate emergency.
