Yorkshire Water

Yorkshire Water is a privatised water company in England, with shareholders primarily based overseas. They are regulated by Ofwat and the Environmental Agency.

In August 2024, Ofwat proposed a £47 million penalty for Yorkshire Water for failures in managing its wastewater treatment works, part of the regulator’s largest sewage investigation.

Wistow Sewage Treatment Works, Langthorne STW, and Melton STW together discharged sewage for a combined total of 14,220 hours, which equates to roughly 19.5 months of continuous spilling.

After racking up a total spill time of 49.8 years in 2024 alone, Yorkshire Water must ensure prompt implementation of improvements that significantly reduce sewage discharges and protect local waterways and wildlife.

Yorkshire Water is responsible for:

  • 51,431

    Sewage Discharges

for a total of 285,930 hours in 2025

  • 41

    sickness reports

    submitted to SAS in 2025

  • Two Star

    environmental performance

    in 2024 (significantly below target)

  • £52.5 million

    dividend payouts

    in 2024/2025 financial year

Who is Yorkshire Water’s CEO?

The current CEO is Nicola Shaw. On top of her £700,000 salary, she has received an additional £1.3 million from Yorkshire Water’s parent company Kelda Holdings in recent years – effectively steering clear of the ‘bonus ban’ imposed on multiple water companies’ senior executives after regulatory investigations found a plethora of illegal activity and significant environmental harm.
