Volunteer With Us

SAS Volunteer Programmes

What we offer…

At SAS we offer a range of ways you can join us. From working towards your various Duke of Edinburgh awards to doing your Work Experience with us; from sparing a few hours a week to month-long projects; we will have fun, engaging and meaningful work for you to do.

We have had more than a little success with our volunteers going on to great things! Staff members Ellie (Education and Design Officer) and Jack (Community Coordinator) both started out with us working on Volunteer Projects, while David started as a volunteer, then became a Rep and is now our Science and Policy Officer. Multiple Work Experience participants have also gone on to become Regional Reps, including Lily Copping, Alex Goodchild, Maddie Davison and Jake Brown.

It’s not all about us though, the CV benefits and valuable experience you will obtain while with us will hopefully set you in good stead to continue working in marine conservation. Have a look at the specific roles below and, once you have found an opportunity that suits you, send an email to Jack  (jack@sas.org.uk) with your CV, the dates you are looking to fill and a little information about yourself (specific areas you are interested in etc.).

SAS Volunteer Projects

GET INVOLVED

These are a more formal type of volunteering aimed at University students or their equivalent and run from a month to a whole year. We have set time-lines for these in place and you will focus on specific projects.

SAS + Duke of Edinburgh

JOINING FORCES

In 2017 alone we helped 21 young people towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards and, this year, this has risen to 32 students. Because of this, we are looking at becoming an official Provider. In the meantime we run a simple beach clean opportunity to help you achieve the volunteer hours needed.

SAS Work Experience

MORE THAN A JOB

This is aimed at students still in education looking for a week/2 weeks spent in a working environment. The focus of this will be to give the student an idea of how the charity functions as a whole with time divided between each department;

  • Fundraising
  • Education
  • Campaigns
  • Community

JOIN US AT SAS HQ

Even if you only have a few hours to spare, we could still use your help! As a busy office with so many projects on the go we have a range of logistical work we need assistance with. From packing Beach Clean Boxes to entering petition data, each job is vital and supports the greater work we do here.

Special Skills?!

SOMETHING ELSE

Not sure if you fit into any of the above categories but have specific skills you think would benefit us (art, design, science, photography etc.)? We may have a project for you!

Our Stories

My time at Surfers Against Sewage was short but the opportunity provided a significant insight into the incredible impact that the charity makes towards protecting our UK Coastlines, but also how much time, work and energy are required to make a positive environmental change between communities, industry and government. I was given the fortunate experience of working closely with Ellie and Dom in finalising the design and trialing the delivery of their brand new Ocean School programme, introducing some of my ideas and motivations around experiential outdoor learning.
