Ulverston - The North Rep
I grew up in Jersey in the Channel Isles, and one of my oldest and fondest memories is snorkelling with my Dad, swimming out to the harbour wall and being scared to jump off the steps – to be honest I still get a little scared after the 7th step! We lived next to a small sailing school where I was lucky enough to learn to sail. I became a sailing instructor after a few years, and my passion for the sea led me to study Naval Architecture at Uni whilst working part-time at the local sailing centre.
I now live in Cumbria with my wife, son and border collie. I feel very lucky to have the best of both worlds – 150 miles of varied Cumbrian coastline and the best (in my view!) National Park on our doorstep. We get out every weekend hiking, exploring, and now beach cleaning! I love surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and wild swimming but I would describe myself as an enthusiastic amateur – I’m just glad being able to surf isn’t an SAS Rep pre-requisite!
In many ways, my passion for the sea and access to a beautiful clean coastline when I was young gave me the job, family and hobbies I now enjoy. I’m passionate about ensuring that our son and other young people get these opportunities and experiences, whilst raising awareness around how our daily choices can easily damage this fragile environment.
We kick-started Beach Clean Cumbria in December 2019 after realising that the change we wanted to see on our beaches was down to us. It’s been exciting seeing it grow and getting more and more people involved in the beach clean movement. I’m very excited to now be part of the bigger SAS campaign – let’s do it!
