Young Beach Lovers Release Protest Single ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ to Protect our Beaches

Today something pretty special is taking place aboard the good ship Tamesis Dock on London’s South Bank. Thirteen normal kids from across the UK, who met at the SAS tent during last summers Somersault Festival in North Devon, have come together once again. Together they certainly aren’t normal anymore, no they’re The Power Penguins, an amazing band and today sees them launch their protest single ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ to raise funds for SAS campaigns and you can buy your own copy NOW!

These inspiring youngsters aged between just 6 & 12 took part in a song writing workshop with the hugely talented musician Milly Upton at our tent and whilst we knew it would be fun we had no idea just how incredible it would be, as they bought the house down with a headline performance of ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ on Saturday night. Our great friends at Indie Kitchen loved the song so much that they decided it had to be recorded and so the story of the Power Penguins began. Fast forward to today and after recording ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ in the world famous Monnow Valley Studios on the 13th of November, The Power Penguins are ready for their biggest performance yet. Meet The Power Penguins – Who better than the band themselves to explain why it’s so important to support SAS!?

We love the ocean. Now that might sound like a no brainer as we’re penguins, but we really love the ocean. We are the Power Penguins! Our oceans, waves, beaches and wildlife are facing many threats. From climate change, sewage pollution and dangerous shipping practices, to marine litter and much more, we face a huge challenge to protect what we love.

Perhaps most challenging of all is the threat posed by marine litter (most of which is plastic). As penguins we are surrounded by this ever growing ‘plastic soup’ whenever we go in the water. Not only does it mar the beauty of our homes, marine litter causes the deaths of over 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and over 1 million sea birds (like us!) each year because we sadly mistake the litter for food and our bellies become full of plastic or for fun and get tangled up in it. There are now 5.25 trillion items of litter in the world’s oceans, so unless we do something now, things are only going to get worse for us and our friends.

Now being penguins we obviously love music very much and during the Somersault Festival in the summer we worked with our friends Milly Upton, SAS and Indie Kitchen to write a song to raise awareness of the marine litter crisis and to raise money for SAS’s Big Spring Beach Clean, which is massive! Earlier this year over 6500 people joined SAS at 185 beaches to remove over 25 tonnes from our coastline. However SAS would like to go bigger and better again in 2016 and aim to organise 200.

We decided that the money that ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ raises will go directly towards helping more schools and young people to get involved with the Big Spring Beach Clean. This money will enable SAS to provide 50 schools across the UK with;

• A Special Seas For Life education resources so they can learn about the problems that our oceans face.
• Their own Big Spring Beach Cleaners equipment packs
• Seas For Life stickers and certificates for every student who gets involved
• A signed version of Commotion in the Ocean and a Power Penguins poster
