The People vs Plastic week of action: Celebrating people power

This Plastic Free July, thousands joined The People vs Plastic week of action, sending one clear message: enough is enough – we need the UK Government to step up now.

From local protests to Trash Mobs in schools and Million Mile Cleans across the UK, communities from all over united together and rolled up their sleeves to tackle plastic pollution at its source. Together, we’ve collected tonnes of plastic pollution, called out the biggest polluters, and demanded real action from decision-makers.

Here’s what we achieved:

✊ Thousands of Ocean Activists united through 15 Plastic Protests in communities across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales

🏫 2,121 pupils joined forces to demand action across 23 Trash Mobs in schools.

🍟 106 Million Mile Cleans took place across the week, removing plastic pollution from the environment and collecting data to hold polluters to account.

🤝 500 members of the public formed a human chain along Penzance promenade to symbolise protecting the ocean from plastic pollution.

How does this make an impact?

Ocean Activists across the UK have, once again, shown that real change starts with people power. By coming together, we’re reminded of the strength we have united. Through communities rising up all across the UK to take action, we have sent a clear united message to big polluting brands and governments that we’ve had enough: that we refuse to sit back and let plastic pollution suffocate the ocean, while polluters rack up their profits.

Every voice raised, every piece of plastic picked up, every petition signed, and every conversation started pushes us closer to a future free from single-use plastic and a system that puts profit over the planet. The people are rising up to turn the tide on plastic pollution, and we won’t stop until we win.

So here’s to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and cleaned up. We ARE turning the tide together.

What can we do next?

And now, we’re taking your voices straight to powerful decision makers, as they meet for the Global Plastics Treaty in Geneva this August. We’ll be there to keep the pressure on UK delegates and ensure they seal a historic, legally-binding deal to end plastic pollution worldwide – and implement the changes we urgently need here in the UK, without delay.

Stay in the loop by following us on Instagram and keep an eye on our our live blog for daily updates to witness how the Global Plastic Treaty unfolds.

Help us keep the pressure on if you agree: it’s time to end the plastic crisis – and demand a FULL STOP to plastic pollution. 👇
