Dip a Day In October

Our wild waters are life-giving. They’re an incredible boost to our health and wellbeing. Vital for nature to thrive. And a place where so many of us forge community connections.

But they’re in urgent need of life-saving too. Our waterways have faced decades of neglect and, even now, still suffer from sewage pollution.

YOU can help. Challenge yourself to dip every day in October in cold water, to raise vital funds to end sewage pollution in our rivers and seas.

FAQ’s

We have some handy FAQs below, but if your question remains unanswered please email our fundraising team at [email protected] who’ll be happy to help.

Dip A Day in October is our communities’ favourite fundraiser. With over 11,000 people taking part in 2023 to raise £202,105 to save the ocean, this annual event sees water loving communities from across the UK unite to raise money for our ocean-saving work through committing to the challenge of dipping every day in cold water throughout the month of October. In 2024, we’re aiming to raise £400,000 to help fund our campaigns to end sewage and plastic pollution.

Anywhere that’s safe and accessible to you. Whether it’s your shower, paddling pool, lido, local beach or river, you can get involved.

Cold water causes short-term stress, which kickstarts the body and gives you a high from increased dopamine, serotonin and b-endorphin levels. Plus, studies have shown that cold water can boost your immune system and could potentially help with conditions from rheumatism to depression. It’s not just the cold water though, it’s also being immersed and in-touch with nature. Read Tom’s story about how the ocean changed his life.

The funds raised through Dip a Day will help support our campaigns to end sewage and plastic pollution. We have a new window of opportunity with a new government elected – having bold promises to turn the tide on the state of water quality in the UK. We need to raise more funds raised to fuel our campaigns to keep the pressure on government to deliver on their plans, and to fund our programmes of work to end sewage pollution in the uk. To give just a few examples of what your funds raised could help support:

  • We are calling on the government to deliver transformational reform of the water system through their proposed new water legislation, that must lead to a reformed system prioritising public health, the environment and value for customer money, and creates healthy rivers, lakes and seas.
  • Our Protecting Wild Waters programme works with communities to achieve designated bathing water status – which creates legal obligations for water quality to be tested at those bathing sites
  • And of course our pollution alert app – keeping thousands of people across the UK notified and safe when sewage has been discharged in their local sim spots, and building a picture of water companies seedy activities.

Safety first. Always. Read our safety guidance and T&Cs before taking the plunge.
