London Marathon Participant Terms and Conditions

1. Registration and Eligibility

1.1 Minimum Age
You must be 18 years of age or older on the day of the London Marathon. SAS places are only available to eligible runners who commit to representing Surfers Against Sewage and meeting all associated fundraising and training expectations.

1.2 Registration
To confirm your place, you must:
– Complete the SAS application and receive confirmation;
– Pay any applicable registration fee;
– Agree to these Terms and Conditions;
– Complete the London Marathon official registration process by the deadline provided.

1.3 Registration Fee
You acknowledge that the £100 registration fee I have paid for my place acceptance is non-refundable and cannot be applied towards my sponsorship target.

2. Fundraising commitments

2.1 Sponsorship Pledge
By accepting a charity place for the London Marathon through SAS, You’ll use your best endeavours to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage in connection with your participation in the event and, in particular aim to raise at least £2,500 in sponsorship. All funds raised must be submitted to SAS within six (6) weeks after the event. Please note that Gift Aid doesn’t count towards the fundraising target, and the £2,500 threshold doesn’t include any matched funding contributions. Matched funding is encouraged and should only be used to match anything you’ve raised from £2,500 and above.

2.2 Use of Funds
All donations and sponsorship collected must be paid to Surfers Against Sewage. No portion of the funds may be used to cover participant costs such as travel, accommodation, or gear.

2.3 Legal and Ethical Fundraising
You agree to conduct all fundraising legally and ethically in line with the values of Surfers Against Sewage and the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice.

3. Health, Safety & Insurance

3.1 Medical Responsibility
You are responsible for ensuring you are medically and physically prepared to undertake a full marathon. SAS strongly recommends a consultation with your GP or a qualified medical practitioner before commencing training.

3.2 Personal Risk
Participation in the London Marathon is undertaken at your own risk. SAS accepts no liability for any injury, illness, or loss sustained during training or the event, unless caused by its proven negligence.

3.3 Insurance
SAS does not provide personal accident, travel, or equipment insurance. Participants are encouraged to obtain suitable insurance.

4. Cancellations, Deferrals & Withdrawals

4.1 Participant Withdrawal
If you are no longer able to participate, you must inform SAS in writing at the earliest opportunity. Registration fees and donations are non-refundable.

4.3 Event Cancellation or Changes
If the London Marathon is postponed or cancelled, SAS will follow the guidance provided by the event organiser and communicate updates as soon as possible. SAS is not liable for any additional expenses or loss incurred.

5. Media & Publicity

5.1 Photography and Filming
You may be photographed or filmed during the London Marathon. By accepting a place with SAS, you consent to your image and name being used for marketing and promotional purposes by SAS.

5.2 Opt-Out
If you do not wish your image or name to be used, you must inform SAS in writing at the point of accepting your place.

6. Data Protection

6.1 Use of Personal Data
Your personal data will be processed by SAS in accordance with our Privacy Policy (https://www.sas.org.uk/privacy-policy) for the purposes of administering your participation, event safety, and related communications.

6.2 Third-Party Sharing
Where required, your details may be shared with the London Marathon organisers or their affiliates solely for purposes related to the event.

7. General Conduct

7.1 Respect and Representation
As a representative of Surfers Against Sewage, you agree to conduct yourself responsibly and positively. You must follow the London Marathon’s Code of Conduct and respect race officials, volunteers, and fellow participants.

7.2 Environmental Responsibility
SAS expects all participants to champion eco-friendly practices throughout their marathon experience—avoiding single-use plastics, using sustainable gear, and raising awareness for ocean protection.

7.3 Amendments
SAS reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions as necessary. Any updates will be communicated via email or posted on our official website.
