I have had a deep love and respect for the ocean for as long as I can remember. As a young child my life revolved around the sea, both in my imagination and reality. My obsession was recognized by my parents and I was given the nickname ‘Na Mara’ – Gaelic for ‘of the sea’. As I grew older I naturally became interested in water-sports, particularly surfing and sailing. I was soon taking the train to the coast after school for evening sessions. As a teenager I became a dinghy instructor for my local yacht club, teaching on summer camps and taking part in various events.
After spending a couple of years working abroad I have now returned to Scotland and am studying marine and freshwater biology at university. Over the years I have had the privilege of being able to immerse myself in the beauty of the sea and would like to lead a life dedicated to its conservation. I wish to lend a hand in the creation of a healthy relationship between us and our oceans.
