I grew up in a seaside town in North Norfolk and totally took the sea for granted. Then I lived in landlocked Wiltshire for 20 years and missed it so much. Now I am finally back within earshot of the waves which is amazing, I feel like I’m home. I’m a Playworker and Trainer by trade and have spent a couple of years working freelance for Scrapstore Bristol. I know that you can re-use all sorts of rubbish for play and creative projects. I try and link the environment to all of my training – which is mainly outside – and always manage to fit in a beach clean reference or two.
I beach clean several times a week, as do many others in the village, it’s a great community. I have a back garden full of ghost gear and plastic which I’m sure will come in handy for something one day! I’ve organised the last two SAS Beach Cleans at Porthtowan and really enjoyed chatting to people about what we pick up. I also volunteered at the SAS Rubbish Day out at Eden, where my team won, although that wasn’t a lot to do with me, the kids were brilliant! As a Rep for Porthtowan, I’m looking forward to more beach cleans and getting a little more involved with SAS.
