For the last 25 years, the surf industry has been promoting surf and ocean environmentalism through its Environmental Fund – well before it was cool to be ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’. In fact the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) made ocean environmentalism and sustainability part of its mission right out of the gate.
In addition to being the official trade association for surf brands, SIMA also actively supports oceanic environmental efforts through its 501(c)(3) charitable environmental foundation, the SIMA Environmental Fund. Since its creation in 1989, the Fund has raised nearly $7 million for environmental groups seeking to protect the world’ oceans, beaches and waves through the generosity of the companies and individuals that make up the surf industry.
So how do they do it and what does it take to keep an entire industry committed to supporting the environment? SIMA Executive Director Sean Smith will talk about the organization’s grant program and the unique Waterman’s Weekend fundraiser that drives it and keeps brands engaged.
