About the speaker

Hugo took the helm at Surfers Against Sewage in late 2008 and has overseen a sustained period of development, growth and impact for the organisation, which has galvanised its position as one of the UK’s most effective marine conservation charities. He has overseen the transition of the organisation from a single-issue campaign group to a national environmental charity with extensive national and international influence.

He has a long history of involvement with the organisation, first in 1991 by entering the bodyboard division of an SAS surf competition at Polzeath before then becoming a campaigner and trustee in the 2000s.

Hugo Tagholm, CEO of Surfers Against Sewage SAS is built on an amazing history and track record of success, which has always been based around action inspired by the sea and those most closely connected to the sea.

Hugo leads a passionate team of campaigners, community leaders and environmentalists who have retained the hard hitting SAS tactics of the 1990s along with its distinct identity, whilst also evolving to take on new issues and tackle the current, worsening environmental challenges facing our waves, oceans and beaches.

Hugo has worked at a senior level with various charities big and small, including the Climate Coalition and the Wildlife Trusts. For a number of years he also worked with alongside former Prime Minister’s wife, Sarah Brown, helping develop her charity PiggyBankKids, set up to help save the lives of premature babies and create opportunities for under privileged young people.

Hugo is a member of the Vision Council for World Surfing Reserves and is a former trustee and chairman of the Museum of British Surfing.
