Dear Branch Manager,

I’m a longstanding, loyal and regular shopper with you and would like to thank you for all the hard work that you and your team have put in over the last few months to keep feeding the nation in the face of the pandemic.

However, I’d like to urge you to take more action on the amount of pointless single-use plastic items and packaging that are on your shelves, such as add in here your personal pet hate. These throwaway plastics are a huge part of the plastic pollution crisis sweeping the world and it’s important supermarkets show further leadership to stop our ocean and environment choking on plastics.

Supermarkets collectively produce 59 billion pieces of packaging annually, totalling a mind-boggling 800,000 tonnes every year. With such huge volumes of packaging being produced it is unsurprising that plastic is overwhelming our waste systems and ending up in our rivers, on our beaches and in the ocean where it indiscriminately kills wildlife.

We urgently need you to stop selling pointless plastic products and excessive plastic packaging. I’d like to congratulate you on the progress you have already made to reduce your plastic footprint but this hasn’t yet gone far enough to tackle the scale of the plastic pollution crisis, which sees 12 million tonnes of plastic poured into the ocean every year.

I realise that this isn’t a problem that your branch can solve on its own and that’s why I am asking for you to call on your head office to set ambitious targets for a reduction in pointless single-use packaging. It is also critical that all supermarkets, including yours, are open and transparent about what they are doing across the business to reduce their plastic waste footprint. We need to know how much plastic you are using and where absolute reductions are happening.

I also know that you are just one of many supermarket chains who need to take much more ambitious action on plastics. I am therefore calling on your business to join thousands of individuals and businesses across the UK in Surfers Against Sewage’s #PlasticProtest to demand government set legal targets for plastic and waste reduction for all industries. This will ensure that there is a level playing field for all business to reduce their plastic footprint.

We can’t save the ocean without the help of business so it’s time for your organisation to step up and play its part.

Kind regards,
