SEWAGE Since going live in May our Sewage Alert Service has sent almost 80,000 text alerts, warning you when raw sewage has... Read more

ACTION! Mountain Dew

We found 55 Mountain Dew bottles strewn on the beach during the Boardmasters festival this year. So we’ve posted this shot along with some strong words of wisdom on their official Facebook page (Mountain Dew UK https://www.facebook.com/MountainDewUK ).  We simply added this image and our thoughts. PLEASE, whatever you do, don’t copy this image and post on their FB page telling them what you think of Mountain Dew using our beaches as rubbish dumps, that would probably upset them!  Over 50 SAS supporters have already done this, and Iain Rex even tweaked the SAS image and made this cool version.  We have... POW Victory at Challaborough

Surfers Save Challaborough Today we are stoked to announce a resounding Protect Our Waves victory to safeguard the surfing waves of Challaborough, Devon. Today the Planning Inspectorate could have been deciding the future of the waves at Challaborough.  However, we contested the proposal to dump rock armoury on Challaborough beach, mobilised the local surfing community and ensured their concerns over this inappropriate coastal defence scheme were heard just in time. Over a thousand local surfers, waveriders and beach users signed our Protect Our Waves (POW) petition to the Planning Inspectorate opposing the dumping of rock armoury on the beach as this... Surfers Against Sewage Send Rubbish Christmas Presents

Today Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners have sent identifiable marine litter back to the manufacture wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper as part of the award winning Return To Offender campaign. These rubbish presents were found on beaches around the UK. The Return To Offender campaign acknowledges that these manufacturers didn't drop the litter on beaches themselves, but urges manufactures to improve their anti littering message, reduce their packaging, invest in low impact packaging and support grass roots anti-litter campaigns. SAS supporters all around the UK can actively participant in the Return To Offender campaign. Simply download the Return To Offender letter, sign... Read more

SAS’s year that was 2009

This is the last year as a teenager for Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) as next year is our 20th anniversary. Our 19th year was one of our busiest and most successful years campaigning. 2009 started with yet another shipping accident, this time our beaches were covered in timber. Let's hope we escape a serious shipping catastrophe in 2010. January and February brought a couple of campaign victories. Firstly new regulations came into force to prevent sewage discharge from ships. And after more than 20 campaign actions in Guernsey, the island finally committed to full sewage treatment! Great news for Guernsey as currently 65,000... Read more

Campaign Success For Surfers Against Sewage, Great News For Guernsey’s Water Users

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are celebrating a major campaign victory as the States of Guernsey finally committed to full sewage treatment. This is great news for Guernsey's recreational water users, bathers, water related businesses and the reputation of Guernsey. SAS have been campaigning on Guernsey for full sewage treatment since September 2004. During that period SAS has delivered nearly 20 actions calling for full sewage treatment while an estimated 6,574,500,000 gallons of wastewater and raw sewage has been dumped untreated into the sea off Guernsey. Victory was almost in reach when the States of Guernsey's Public Service Department... Read more

New regulations stop sewage pollution from ships

New regulations that prevent sewage pollution from ships came into force yesterday in the UK. The regulations will help the UK control a shipping industry, which the Government believes could be responsible for 5% of all coastal sewage pollution incidents. This is welcome news to the campaigners at Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) who have been concerned by the length of time it has taken for international agreements made by MARPOL on 'prevention of pollution by sewage from ships' to be transposed into UK law. The new law targets ships that are over 400 gross tonnes (GT) in weight or those less than 400GT... Read more

Surfers support deputies amendment to the wastewater charge in Guernsey

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are supporting the De Lisle/Fallaize amendment to the Public Services Department proposal for first time wastewater charges to be introduced in Guernsey. The new amendment tabled by Deputy David De Lisle and seconded by Matt Fallaize is an improvement on the Public Service Departments' proposal for islanders. It calls on the States to commit to "full sewage treatment" with the relevant work needed, to be funded by the "ring-fenced additional fixed charge". The amendment calls for these commitments within an achievable timescale. SAS has urged all Deputies to support this amendment. The De Lisle/Fallaize amendment... Read more
