Regional Reps Charter
We are hugely grateful to our talented and dedicated team of SAS Regional Reps. Whether organising beach cleans and local campaign actions, or advising on our campaign policy or scientific reports, it all makes a massive contribution to our national capability and ongoing success. As an integral part of the SAS team, Regional Reps are helping Surfers Against Sewage make a tangible difference to the surf spots, beaches and the marine environment right across the UK.
Regional Reps agree to;
- Attend an annual SAS Reps training weekend
- Positively promote SAS and its campaigns in the local area and to the local community.
- Lead, help organise or attend SAS campaign actions in their region wherever possible.
- Recruit local members, activists and supporters to SAS campaign actions locally and nationally.
- Organise at least 2 beach cleans in their region annually.
- Act as SAS’s local ‘beach guardian’, keeping abreast of local water-users’ concerns, regional pollution incidents and potential threats to waves or the wider coastal environment in the area.
- Promote SAS’s national campaign strategies to the local surf, water sports and wider community, along with the local press.
- Endeavour to meet local MPs, councillors and business leaders to engage them with SAS’s ongoing mission to protect and conserve the coastal environment and surfing waves.
- Liaise with local surf clubs, university surf clubs and other water sports associations to ensure they are engaged with current SAS campaigns.
- Promote the benefits of SAS membership to the local community wherever possible.
- Attend SAS’s Regional Reps training days or weekends when possible.
- Act as a regional media spokesperson for SAS.
- Become a direct SAS point of contact for the community, responding to queries promptly, accurately and professionally whether emails or telephone calls. Where responses require greater levels of information they can be passed on to SAS head office.
- Supply SAS with images of local supporters, members, activities, pollution incidents wherever possible.
- Undertake online promotion of SAS, directing contacts to SAS’s Facebook page, the SAS website and other sites of interest.
- Promote any SAS petitions, national campaigns and other activities where needed.
- Make every effort not to bring the name of SAS or the campaigns into disrepute.
- Become a positive role model for SAS, surfers, the community and the environment.
- Adhere to SAS’s environmental policy:
1. Wherever possible unnecessary use of energy will be eliminated.
2. Reduce the needs to transport people and goods and encourage low impact travel.
3. Purchase goods and services that cause least harm to the environment.
4. Avoid waste and promote the conservation, reuse and appropriate recycling of resources.
5. Constantly strive to source materials with the lowest environmental impact.
6. Encourage community awareness of their responsibility for the environment.
7. Promote understanding and participation in environmental issues through education, scientific reports, engaging activists, information provision and consultation.
8. Work with and encourage other organisations, local stakeholders companies and sponsors to protect the environment.
