Born in 1958 I’ve been surfing since the 1970’s and have passionate about environmental issues since being a teenager. As owner of Saltburn Surf Hire and Surf School I started the seafront business in 1983 and began lobbying Northumbrian Water on coastal pollution. I joined SAS in the early 90’s and remain an active member to the present day. I’m also a member of Greenpeace, Survival, Amnesty International and Oxfam. I was also one of the early members of the now defunct local environmental umbrella group ‘Teeswatch’.
I’ve always been aware of the paradox that exists in the sport of surfing. No one can deny the special relationships we have with the natural world and yet intrinsic in that relationship we embrace and use materials derived from manufacturing processes that are very damaging to nature. Each year there are more people surfing and surfers are travelling more to pursue their sport and generally have access to more and more equipment. We are consuming more and our carbon footprint and the damage we are doing to the planet and life upon it is increasing. I believe it is our responsibility to use less in whatever way we can.
