Steve Challinor

I live in Devon with my wife, two kids and three chickens.

I am an environmental consultant and have spent the past 20 years assessing the environmental impacts of coastal and marine projects such as ports, marinas, coast defences, offshore renewables and artificial surfing reefs. I’ve been very lucky to work across the UK and in many places around the world including Belize, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Bahrain, Mauritius, Mozambique, Sri Lanka and Pakistan amongst others. I’ve also been a part-time lecturer at Plymouth University where I taught environmental management to civil and coastal engineering students.

My support for SAS dates back to the early 1990s when I met Chris Hines at a conference and witnessed first hand the water industry’s dismissal of SAS’s views. Over the course of time these views have been validated and our coastal waters are a healthier place for water users, while SAS has grown on its successes and taken on new campaigns. More recently, I’ve supported the Protect Our Waves campaign by writing the report Guidance on the Environmental Impact Assessment of Offshore Renewable Energy Development on Surfing Resources and Recreation, helping out with training for the Regional Reps, and constantly sending the campaign team lots of info and ideas.

In my spare time I cycle a lot and surf when the opportunity arises.
