SAS Big Spring Beach Clean

  • Location: Based in St Agnes, Cornwall
  • Duration: February & March 2012, 2-3 days per week. 10am – 5pm
  • Expenses: Reasonable expenses covered. Agreed in advance.

Aim:

Surfers Against Sewage is offering work placement to a dynamic and proactive individual with a project management, volunteer recruitment, campaigns & events interest or educational/professional background to assist with delivering the SAS Big Spring Beach Clean. The placement allows the individual to gain valuable experience of a broad cross-section of project management/events skills and will also give insights into various marine litter issues and other campaigns.

This role will be heavily supported by the SAS Campaigns team to ensure the successful candidate gains the professional experience and skills they are looking to acquire.

Objectives:

  • Assist with planning and delivering the SAS Big Spring Beach Clean and other community events
  • Marketing & PR of events
  • Social media updates
  • Develop, maintain and manage relationships with event stakeholders & partners where necessary to organise beach cleans including local councils, SAS members, volunteers, SAS Regional Reps, local media and others as required
  • Manage beach clean permissions with the council and volunteers
  • Manage risk assessments with councils and volunteers
  • Become point of liaison with all lead SAS Big Spring Beach Clean volunteers
  • Circulate SAS Big Spring Beach Clean planning documents to all volunteers
  • Distribute SAS Big Spring Beach Clean posters & beach clean packs to SAS Regional Reps and lead volunteers
  • Work on SAS Big Spring Beach Clean articles for Pipeline & www.sas.org.uk
  • Update SAS’s online map at www.sas.org.uk
  • Attend flagship SAS Big Spring Clean event at Porthtowan or Perranporth
  • Document beach cleans with photos and films

Project Aims

  • Deliver SAS Big Spring Beach Clean events across the UK
  • Gain valuable events organising, campaigning and professional experience with SAS
  • Provide the successful candidate with a professional reference

Candidate Profile

Essentials:

  • Interest in the marine environment and conservation
  • Available for 3 days a week, including some weekends.
  • Lives within easily commutable distance of SAS offices in St Agnes, Cornwall (TR5 0RD)
  • Interest/experience in community & volunteer events
  • Good communicator, both written & verbal
  • Interest/experience in project & events management
  • Interest/experience in  PR & communications
  • Personable
  • Interest/experience of the water sports sector/community
  • Dedicated team player
  • Self motivated but able to work under instruction
  • Full clean UK driving license
  • Ability to work flexible hours if necessary
  • IT literate (word, excel, email, internet)
