SAS Tackle Tide Litter on World Environment Day

Today is World Environment Day and you can help Surfers Against Sewage by participating in our Return To Offender anti-beach litter campaign initiative. If you're planning on being at the beach today make sure you have a look around at the amount of litter on the beach and see if you can identify the source of any of it. More often than not labels identifying the company responsible for producing the products are still visible, despite the item being in the sea for long periods of time.

We'd like you to return the litter to the manufacturer with a note from Surfers Against Sewage that calls on them to:

  • To step up the 'anti-littering' message on their products
  • To look at using less harmful packaging to ensure products can be broken down naturally without putting wildlife at risk.
  • To promote recycling and/or reuse wherever possible.
  • To support community beach litter initiatives or 'anti-litter' projects.

With our friends at the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) reporting an estimated 1,987 items of litter for every kilometre of beach in the UK it is more than clear that our beaches are under siege from a rising tide of litter such as plastic pellets, cotton buds and cigarette butts.

Andy Cummins, SAS Campaigns Officer says: "Anyone can help with this campaign. If you're walking the dog on the beach and come across a plastic bottle, take it home, put in a parcel and return it to the address label on the item of litter, not forgetting to enclose a copy of the SAS campaign letter"
