EA Meet Surfers in Newcastle
Over 20 activists joined SAS campaigners at Wednesday's action outside the Environment Agency's (EA) office in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The action marked the latest step in our ongoing campaign against Northumbrian Water's plans to turn off UV sewage treatment outside the bathing season.
The EA are currently assessing the applications from Northumbrian Water and could make a decision within the next few months.
We presented EA officials with a giant wave made up of images of people using local beaches for surfing and other board sports during the winter. Northumbrian Water report that on average no more than 10 people per week use any of the regions beaches for recreation outside the bathing season (ie from October till May).
We had a meeting with the EA after the demo. We have managed to prove to them that water use outside the bathing water is significant, in contrast to Northumbrian Water’s flawed survey results. We are also in ongoing negotiation about other aspects of NW's propsal.
This is not the end of the matter but a significant step forward. Watch this space for more news..!
Thanks to all of you who sent in photos of crowded winter lineups!
