King Arthur and FriendsSurfers Against Sewage (SAS) have drafted in King Arthur, Merlin, Sir Lancelot and a Lady in the Lake for Day 1 of the Public Inquiry into the future of Tintagel's sewage treatment.

At present, raw sewage from Tintagel is being dumped into the sea - no different to what went on in King Arthur's days! As it has a population equivalent of over 2,000, it should by law be subjected to a minimum of secondary level sewage treatment before discharge.

However South West Water are disputing this by saying the village is actually split in two. As the population of each half of the village is less than 2,000, it is arguing that secondary level sewage treatment is not required.

King Arthur and FriendsSouth West Water plans to treat half of the effluent to a primary level and continue to dump the other half untreated (except for a screen to remove rags such as sanitary items). These two discharges will be made through two outfall pipes less than 500 meters apart!

King Arthur, speaking on behalf of Surfers Against Sewage says: "I can't believe the water company plans to provide such a low level of sewage treatment for half of the community and for the other half to not treat it all. As a community, Tintagel is hugely popular with visitors, recreational water users and exceeds the 2000 population equivalent that requires a minimum of secondary level treatment - without this treatment Tintagel will remain in the Dark Ages".
