Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is delighted its campaign to end the dumping of raw sewage off Guernsey is now winning some political support, but these views need fast tracking through the States if it is not to fall by the wayside like the 1997 Liquid Waste Strategy report did.
With many States members backing SAS's call to introduce treatment during this week's green paper discussion on sewage, we believe the States is moving towards acknowledging that the dumping of at least 4 million gallons of raw sewage and wastewater a day in Guernsey waters is having a negative impact on those using the water for recreation and is damaging the island's reputation to the outside world.
SAS will use the remaining period of public consultation to generate further public support for full sewage treatment, urge the States to incorporate a 'benefits study' to put up against the 'costs' that the green paper has only focused on to date and put forward examples of full sewage treatment plants that could be considered for use on the island.
Richard Hardy, SAS Campaign Director says: “We feel we have made a bit of a breakthrough in getting some States members to acknowledge that Guernsey needs sewage treatment and without it the island's reputation may be damaged. But its vital that this acknowledgement is fully committed too by the States otherwise the public could be left feeling disengaged and despondent as they were following similar statements made on sewage in 1997”.
