Sas/Oneill Activities Week - What's that says Captain KeithSome of the country’s most ‘environmentally switched-on’ primary school children joined Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and O’Neill for their Marine Environment Activities Week, which finished in Falmouth last Friday.

Sas/Oneill Activities Week - Duncan collects marine litterBased at Falmouth’s National Maritime Museum the activity week included an environmental boat trip on the regions fastest R.I.B. (through supporting sponsor Orca Seafaris) to learn more about Cornwall’s unique marine environment and the creatures it sustains. There was also a fun art based workshop where each class worked on creating an ‘environmentally protected beach scene’ banner which they can take back to their school at the end of the day.

Sas/Oneill Activities Week - Penzance School with Captain KeithThe 5 school classes involved in this project all earnt their places through hard work during the school year. They designed a range of projects that looked to safeguard and protect the marine environment from pollution. The projects were all really creative and included making thought provoking sculptures out of litter they collected from beach cleans; writing informative school magazines and encouraging families to get involved in recycling projects and writing raps and songs about the damage being done to the world’s oceans and performing it to their entire school.

Sas/Oneill Activities Week - Cubert School with Sam Lamiroy & Jake BoexAs well as SAS campaigners the children got to meet some of the UK’s top surfers form the O’Neill team. Top UK surfers Sam Lamiroy, Robyn Davies, Jake Boex and SAFFA Duncan Scott shared their surfing experiences with the children throughout the week, in particular the roles they play in promoting the clean seas message. Sas/Oneill Activities Week - Duncan Scott with Trevithick CrewHaving experienced both the good, the bad and the downright ugly of water quality during surf sessions they spoke of being some of the first people affected by pollution incidents.

The 5 winning school classes and the days they were with us in Falmouth were:

Monday 18th July – Cubert School, near Newquay, Cornwall
Tuesday 19th July – Laira Green School, near Plymouth, Devon
Wednesday 20th July – Devoran School, near Truro, Cornwall Thursday 21st July – Penzance Junior School, Cornwall
Friday 22nd July – Trevithick Junior School, Camborne, Cornwall

Andy Cummins, SAS Campaigner and Event Organiser says: “This was the first time we provided a resource for primary schools in the form of this project and we’re stoked with how the week went. It was not only fun for the kids but highly educational in terms of protecting the environment and we’re looking forward to doing the same again next year”.

Sas/Oneill Activities Week - Robyn on boat wirth Penzance SchoolO’Neill’s Robyn Davies, The UK’s top woman surfer says: “When we visited the winning schools to tell them they had won a place on our Environment Activities Week we were totally amazed by the enthusiasm, passion and energy the kids had for making an environmental difference. This again showed itself during the activity day and was undoubtedly a very rewarding week for both myself, the kids and their teachers”.
