Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) have expressed their satisfaction that the operation to date to remediate Dumpsite C at Nancekuke by RAF Portreath is being carried out in a professional and transparent way as a formal submission of the MOD's planning application is lodged with Cornwall County Council today.
SAS have been fully informed of progress on the site with particular emphasis on safeguarding the water environment from chemical pollution leaching from the dumpsites.
Water quality samples have been taken and no chemical warfare agents or their breakdown products have been identified which is reassuring to both us as the voice of water users and for local residents.
Whilst remediation of all the dumpsites will inevitably be a difficult proposition, SAS remain most concerned over the remediation of Dumpsites D and E which we believe represent the greatest risk to potentially polluting water. It is thought much of the unknown waste here is located in mineshafts, where horizontal shafts or adits used for drainage could present remediators with a huge headache in preventing a potential pollution incident.
These will be the last two dumpsites tackled and SAS will ensure the voice of the water user will be accounted for at all stages in their remediation.
