CLEAN SEAS PETITION DELIVERED TO THE ENVIRONMENT MINISTER

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) yesterday delivered a clean seas petition to Environment Minister Elliot Morley on behalf of the village of St Agnes.

The petition, received in person by the minister, contained nearly 900 signatures calling for ministerial support to improve sewerage systems in the village.

In particular, SAS have called for improvements to be made on the intermittent discharges at Peterville and the Boat Pen pumping stations, which have repeatedly lead to untreated sewage entering the sea via a stream and making bathing water quality poor at Trevaunance
Cove - a popular beach for swimming and surfing.

In a few weeks the minister will issue guidelines to all water companies concerning environmental improvements that need to be carried out during the next periodic review of the water industry.

Whilst some remedial work has recently been carried out by South West Water in St Agnes, SAS believe the village will only be free of pollution incidents once and for all when the intermittent discharges are upgraded. We hope the minister will support us in calling for this work to be undertaken as a matter of urgency.

Richard Hardy, SAS Campaigns Director says: "The village of St Agnes is united in calling for these improvements and we are hopeful that the minister will help us in our campaign for clean and safe water all year round."
