Cornish and Open

Surfers Against Sewage and Ripcurl yesterday completed the annual Cornish and Open Surf Contest, which has been running since 1963. The contest has been a cult classic for years attracting some of the best surfers from the UK and the World to the consistent waves at Porthtowan Beach and we were not let down in anyway by this year's event. The contest prides itself on creating a good family atmosphere each year and this year beach goers were treated to some great surfing as well as small scale entertainment on the beach in the form of beach art, face painting and puppet shows which kept the kids busy!

Friday saw the under 14, under 16 and under 18 boys and girls ripping up the powerful overhead swell with a very high standard in all of their respective finals. Saturday saw the swell decrease, however, it was a lot cleaner and the sun came out! The longboard, seniors and bodyboard were ran up to the finals, the open was ran up to the semi finals.

The swell was forecast to get better on the Sunday but unfortunately this never materialised. The longboard final was ran on Sunday, but the open, mastors, ladies and bodyboard was called of due to lack of surf, they shared the prize money. Making the best of the waves for the longboard final were Chris 'Guts' Griffiths, Elliot Dudley, Ben Skinner and Sam Bleakley, with Sam coming out on top in a final that was contested in small waves.

SAS were also able to launch TEAM SAS, a combination of leading World and UK competitive surfers, plus underground chargers all of whom give SAS their 100% backing to tackle pollution and safeguard the water environment.

Their role is one of roving ambassador, spreading our environmental message to the furthest corners of the globe and planting a compassionate seed amongst youngsters coming into the sport to protect their watery playground.

SAS are delighted to have had the support of Ripcurl, who have sponsored this event over the last 5 years and have pledged their support for a further 2 years following this years event.

We also have to thank the Blue Bar for their co-sponsorship, hospitality and for providing the venue for the excellent up and coming Brighton based band Lucky Jim who provided the tunes at a packed contest party on Saturday night. Thanks also to media sponsors Carve/Surf Girl, the highly respected surf magazine. We also have to thank Carrs of Truro for providing us with a Chrysler Jeep for beach judging, Resin8 for donating a surfboard for the SAS raffle and Sick Lame and Lazy for providing gift vouchers as prizes for the Bodyboard comp.
