Dear
Minister,
The
European Parliament has recently voted to amend the Bathing Water
Directive.
The
vote was a triumph for 'recreational water users' with MEP's acknowledging
that its not just 'swimmers', but all types of recreational water
users that need protecting from sewage polluted water. Surfers,
windsurfers, kitesurfers, kayakers and sailors across the EU are
celebrating this recognition after 27 years of being ignored as
a group that uses Europe's beaches and inland waters year round.
There
were other improvements that will make Europe's waters the cleanest
and safest in the world. These include tougher new water quality
standards and an improvement in the way the public receives information
on water quality.
The
Parliament's decision still needs your approval and that of the
other Environment Ministers of the EU. Surfers Against Sewage
(SAS) and its supporters urge you to ensure the progressive steps
made to date are not reversed when you meet to discuss the Directive
on the 22nd December.
Yours
in clean water,
A supporter of Surfers Against Sewage and its Water Alliance
NB:
The Water Alliance is a coalition of groups working with SAS to
ensure clean and safe water. It includes the likes of the Royal
Yachting Association (RYA), Central Council for Physical Recreation
(CCPR) and the British Surfing Association (BSA).
