Leading
environmental campaign group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are
today celebrating following an auction of longboards featuring
designs from world - acclaimed artists raised over £70,000
for the campaign for clean seas.
The
Longlife Exhibition featured board designs by Damien Hirst, Jamie
Hewlett (Tank Girl and Gorillaz), graffiti artist Banksy, SAS
Andy Hughes and many more who donated works to raise funds for
the campaign organisation.
Having
toured galleries across the UK, the tour finished at Newquays
Bark House Gallery where today the boards came under the hammer.
Bidders from across the country had travelled to Cornwall to attend
the auction and buyers from overseas escalated the bidding by
phone.
The
days highlight was the sale of the two Damien Hirst boards
which went for a massive £38,000 and £21,000 a piece;
figures which took the auction way beyond SAS expectations.
The
Longlife exhibition was a joint venture between Oxbow and SAS
- a unique way to highlight the threat of coastal pollution. Through
the artworks, SAS have been able to reach a wider audience with
their message. Oxbow has generously pledged all profits from the
sale of the boards to SAS.
Vicky
Garner, SAS Campaigns Director says: "As a not for profit
organisation, every penny of the funds raised through the Longlife
exhibition will go directly into running the SAS campaign in future
years. Frankly, were stunned with the outcome! A big thank
you must go to Oxbow and to all the artists who have given their
time and talent for free".
