The
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) call for full sewage treatment in
Brighton has stepped up a gear by forming a new 'Enough Shit Already'
campaign base at the Hemp Shop in Brighton's North Laines.
The
shop is supporting the SAS campaign to win clean and safe bathing
water in the city by calling on Southern Water to include UV treatment
for Brighton's sewage when the company announces the proposed
site to build a new sewage and wastewater treatment works in the
area.
A
giant 'Enough Shit Already' campaign poster as been draped across
much of the shop front window and has become a major focal point
for people looking to get involved in the campaign. As well as
picking up a letter to post off to Southern Water's Managing Director
people are also signing up to get involved with demonstrations
against the company who to date have shown no interest in providing
their bill payers with a 'state of the art' treatment works.

Every
day 95 million litres of sewage are discharged untreated into
the sea off Brighton via an outfall at Brighton. That's 80
Olympic swimming pools of raw shit every 24 hours. Inadequately
treated sewage contains millions of viruses and bacteria which
can survive for days and days in seawater - swallowing one
of those pathogens can cause illness from gastro-enteritis
through to Hepatitis A and E.Coli 0157. |
Vicky
Garner, SAS Campaigns Director says: "You don't pay your
water bills to be fobbed off with second rate solutions. Southern
Water make billions of pounds profit why should that be reflected
in fat cat salaries and shareholder dividends whilst the environment
and bill payer is neglected? Our local campaign base will be a
place where people who want to make a difference can!"
Nathan
from the Hemp Shop adds: "Raising awareness of sustainable
alternatives is a major part of what the Hemp Shop is about! With
Brighton being the only resort of its size in the UK still pumping
raw shit into its bathing waters is totally unacceptable - Brighton
deserves better."
'Enough
Shit Already' hemp campaign T-Shirts will soon be on sale from
the shop.
