The pack has been written in response to ever increasing numbers of queries from both students and teachers for educational materials based around the story of SAS, which campaigns for clean water on behalf of all water users and is famous for its' humorous and creative campaign tactics.

Consisting of three separate project plans and a 20 minute video made by Classroom Video, the pack is flexible and each project can be followed independently. The projects include: Introduction to Citizenship, Debating an Issue (in which pupils role play the different people involved in a planning debate over the building of a new sewage treatment works), and Setting up a Campaign, which encourages diverse work to cover each aspect of a successful campaign. The video, teacher booklet, student materials and some additional printed matter are included in the pack.

Vicky Garner, campaign director of SAS said:

"The story of SAS is both inspiring and engaging. The success of the organisation is testimony to the fact that with determination, facts, hard work and fun, everyone can make a difference to their world. Pulling together real life case studies from SAS campaigns and encouraging students to role play, debate, form opinions and take ownership of an issue, we hope the SAS Citizenship pack will inspire young people to engage in life, in a positive and rewarding way."

The pack, sponsored by the Clean Water Initiative and PADI Project Aware has been written for Surfers Against Sewage by Susie Moore and Sarah Bentley (a teacher and competitive surfer herself) and the design and illustrations are by three students from Falmouth College of Art. The pack is to be launched with a nationwide schools tour, starting on 14th May at Mounts Bay School in Penzance, Cornwall.

The tour, which is being funded by the Quiksilver Initiative will include talks from SAS' James Hendy, and Sarah Bentley, who will in turn talk about engaging in issues and making a difference using the SAS story as an illustration, and moving outside your comfort zones, both in sporting issues and also in your responsibilities to wider society. There will also be presentations from a representative of the BSA (British Surfing Association) who will be talking about beach awareness and safety issues.

The education pack costs £40 and is available now here! or from SAS on 0845 458 3001/
