SAS
have chosen a 'marine litter' theme with strong images evoking
a beach landscape under attack by pollution. The collection of
images have been donated by the much respected St Ives photographer
Andy Hughes and express his relationship of the beaches in Cornwall
and his experience of it as both a surfer and photographer.
The
striking images highlight a natural world being threatened by
unwanted unnatural objects destined to roam the seas forever.
Whilst the images are undoubtedly beautiful they are also directly
accountable for the deaths of wildlife, fish and marine mammals
who can ingest or become entangled in marine litter. Many of the
images are of plastic debris and this is one of the worst forms
of marine litter that blights the UK's coastline each year. Taking
years to break down and leaching nasty chemicals into our marine
environment a little plastic can cause a lot of damage.
Richard
Hardy, SAS Campaigner says: "This collection of images is
undoubtedly beautiful - but at the same time acts as a painful
reminder of the damage litter is causing to our nations beaches.
