SAS/QUIKSILVER SURFSHOW TOUR 2002
North East Coast - 10th May 2002

The SAS/Quiksilver Surfshow Tour arrives in Teesside and will visit Northumbrian Water's "Bran Sands" Sewage treatment and sludge processing plant in Middlesborough on the 10th May 2002.

Carrying some of the UK's best surfers plus World Masters Surfing Champion Gary Elkerton the Surfers Against Sewage Tour is a 10 day mission across the UK celebrating all that is special about our coast. 20 million people use the coastline of the UK every year and in many areas tourism and leisure play a key role in the economy and well being of local communities.

This visit offers a perfect photo opportunity to the media.
The UK's top surfers with surf boards and brightly coloured rash vests standing in front of huge vats of bubbling sewage - not a site you'll see everyday!

The river Tees was renowned as being one of the most polluted rivers in the UK and for years had caused many beaches on the North East Coast to fail the minimum EU standard for Bathing Waters.
Now, withTreatment works such as the one at Bran Sands in Middlesborough, and a total of 70% of the north east's population receiving UV disinfection, a record 22 beaches along the north east coast have achieved recommendations in this years good beach guide.

James Hendy of SAS said today - Treating Sewage in industrialised areas isn't just about dealing with bacteria and viruses. With industrial discharges to sewer you have to think about the toxic chemicals and persistent pollutants that would end up in the water environment if the effluent wasn't treated properly. SAS are visiting Northumbrian Water's Bran Sands treatment works to see how the water industry approach sewage treatment in such a heavily industrialised area. Removing these pollutants from effluents before they are discharged is vital for the health of a water environment and for the health of the water user on the North East coast!
