Autumn Beach Clean Series – Calling Volunteers!

Rallying Cry To Our Beach Clean Army!

Once again we are calling for more than 3500 beach lovers to join us at 150 Autumn Beach Cleans across the UK during the week of the 2nd – 8th of November to tackle marine litter head on and help to ‘close the loop on marine plastics’. All Autumn Beach Cleans are being led by a local ‘Lead Volunteer’ and we are calling on coastal communities to show these fantastic volunteers their support by heading down in their thousands to remove over 15 TONNES of trash from our tidelines and recycle over 10,000 plastic bottles and cans.

We’re so proud of the incredible number and spread of beach cleans that have been registered. With events of all shapes and sizes taking place in the farthest corners of our beautiful island nation there’s certain to be plenty to chose from near you. Please use the links below to find your nearest Autumn Beach Clean, there’s  no need to register, just dress up warm, head down to the beach and say hello to the Lead Volunteer!

Each autumn UK beach lovers brace themselves for the inevitable mass accumulation of marine litter (the majority of which is plastic). The combined effects of 8 million items of litter entering our oceans each day (1), the ever strengthening North Atlantic hurricane season and the end of seasonal beach clean operations lead to a ‘Perfect Storm’ of marine litter at our beaches, cause great upset to people for whom the beach is a vital community space, to be enjoyed and protected 365 days a year. In response the Autumn Beach Clean Series unites, inspires and empowers coastal communities to take action to protect their beaches.

Sadly it has become clear that the marine litter crisis cannot be solved through beach cleans alone. That is why at the heart of the Autumn Beach Clean Series is a commitment to promote the need to ‘Close the Loop on Litter’ (2) by stemming the flow of plastics to our oceans and viewing the plastics that are already in our oceans as a resource rather than simply WASTE.

So as well as removing over 15 TONNES of litter from the marine environment all plastic bottles, cans, ghost gear (lost or discarded fishing gear) and other suitable materials collected will be recycled from the 150 beaches and each and every one of the 3500 volunteers will be asked to use their love for their beaches to help us raise awareness of the need to move towards a more sustainable Circular Ocean Economy.

The marine litter crisis is often overwhelming but you can make a difference! All you have to do is head down to your favourite beach this November, grab a pair of gloves and a bin bag and join your beach community to protect what you love.

SAS would like to thank lead sponsors The Crown Estate and Selfridges Project Ocean for their support.
