Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are delighted to have collaborated with M&C Saatchi and Coy! Communications on the release a new series of campaign adverts, which highlight the ongoing environmental campaigns in an extreme and humorous way. This is classic SAS territory, and a technique that has been used since the organisation’s very inception in 1990 with giant turds and gas masks amongst other items making a regular appearance on the campaign trail.

The three adverts depict the ongoing campaigns on sewage, marine litter and toxic chemical campaigns in a graphic and perhaps, shocking way. The issue of marine pollution is a significant threat to the UK’s oceans, the wildlife that inhabits these areas and all those that use our beautiful beaches. SAS has a whole range of campaigns and community initiatives tacking environmental and health issues relating to the UK’s shores.

Whether it’s sewage or marine litter, toxic chemicals or wave protection, SAS are campaigning harder than ever to protect waves, oceans, beaches and water users’ health around the UK. This May, SAS are launching new online and text-based real-time sewage alert systems so you can check water quality at your favourite surf spots. All the latest campaigns can be seen at www.sas.org.uk

THANK YOU to all our volunteers who did an amazing job on teh Motivocean Beach Clean Tour(if you haven’t received your Motivocean volunteering certificate yet please email- info@sas.org.uk), WELL DONE to all our regional reps who helped organise events, thanks to Thames 21 who we couldn’t have worked without in London, thanks to the surf schools that worked with us, thanks to Richard Gregory for filming at Croyde, and to all the other people that helped us out at events. Not forgetting a huge thank you to v and to the Quiksilver Foundation.

We still have a number of beach cleans to hold as part of Motivocean Beach Clean initiative before the end of the year. If you are a school, youth club, university or just an interested youth volunteer, please do get in touch with hugo@sas.org.uk. We can cover all youth volunteer expenses, including surf lessons. We hope to attract over 1000 youth volunteers (16-25 years old) through the scheme this year alone, and are confident of hitting this target, with your help.

In the last week of August, Surfers Against Sewage, in association with the myGames (powered by v) & the Quiksilver Foundation, hit the road with the biggest beach clean tour in our history. Since 1994, the volume of marine litter on UK beaches has increased by 146%* and SAS is helping combat this tide line of trash through its beach cleans and ongoing environmental campaigns. ‘Motivocean’ was SAS’s most ambitious beach clean tour to date and calling in at 23 major UK beaches and waterside locations across the nation, including 9 locations in the south west and even undertaking a beach clean on the river Thames.

We were delighted with the turn out to these events, with over 700 youth volunteers participating across the UK to date, and well over 1000 volunteers getting involved overall. We removed hundreds of bags of litter, which contributed to more than 5 tonnes of marine litter that SAS has removed from beaches around the country this year alone.

At 09.34, on the 25th of June SAS and four of the UK’s best Stand Up Paddle-boarders set out to cross the English Channel, aiming to make history and set two new World Records. In the first event of it’s kind, our relay team and solo paddler took on the challenge together to support Surfers Against Sewage campaigns. The conditions were great for most of the 21-mile crossing, however the attempt was under threat, when in the middle of the World’s busiest shipping lane, we found ourselves shrouded in fog with visibility down to less than 500ft, the paddlers bobbing over ominously large bow waves, which emerged like ghosts from the fog from the huge ships they originated. But we eventually broke into brilliant sunshine and were greeted by a pod of dolphins and our paddlers pushed on for France, arriving to claim a brand-new World record*!

The aim of the film is to inspire the viewer into taking more action to protect their local beach, coastline or surf sport, and it offers some of the first steps you can take as a fledgling campaigner. There are all sorts of ways we can all do more, from picking up a few pieces of beach litter after each surf to launching a campaign at our local spot. If your spot is suffering from a problem – litter, CSO discharges, industrial pollution, over development – you can take action, the power in your hands to make a difference. If there is an issue affecting your spot follow these simple steps:

Contact SAS to discuss the first steps

Document the incident for evidence (photos, film, witness statements etc..)

Call the Environment Agency to report pollution incidents

Encourage support from other water users and other groups (strength in numbers – canoe clubs, swimming clubs, sailing clubs, local Women’s Institute, etc)

Contact your local MP

Set up a petition

We released Protect Our Waves with The Surfer’s Path at the end of February, reaching over 30,000 readers directly with our campaign message covering traditional and new SAS themes. The release was timed with a national tour, run in association with The Surf Screen, which hit cities and coastal towns from Edinburgh and Tynemouth to Bournemouth and Brighton. We launched the tour with a special premiere screening at the newly refurbished Miners & Mechanics Institute in St Agnes, the home of SAS, where the Director Richard Stewart and some of the cast including Trev Garland, Candice O’Donnell and Jack Johns joined us.

As those of you who have already seen it will know, the film is quite a departure from previous SAS productions, and presents the campaigns in a whole new way. We’ve had a fantastic reaction to the production; with many a new member inspired to join and lapsed members reengaging with our campaigns.
