SAS release ‘Crap’, ‘Rubbish’ & ‘Toxic’ adverts

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are delighted to have collaborated with M&C Saatchi and Coy! Communications on the release a new series of campaign adverts, which highlight the ongoing environmental campaigns in an extreme and humorous way. This is classic SAS territory, and a technique that has been used since the organisation’s very inception in 1990 with giant turds and gas masks amongst other items making a regular appearance on the campaign trail. The three adverts depict the ongoing campaigns on sewage, marine litter and toxic chemical campaigns in a graphic and perhaps, shocking way. The issue of marine pollution is a... Read more

New Bathing Water Profiles

Good things come to those who wait  A Surfers Against Sewage campaign victory, secured in the revised Bathing Water Directive was launched on the 25th of March by the Environment Agency with the publishing of beach profiles for bathing waters. These beach profiles highlight what forms of pollution the beach suffers from and identifies the discharge points. As well as vital information on sewage discharge points, locations of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOS) and other sewerage infrastructure, these bathing water profiles also include maps and a description of the beach. SAS Campaign Director Andy Cummins says: “Bathing water profiles will not make the water cleaner, but... Read more

SAS’ The Year That Was 2010

2010 saw SAS turn 20 and it was one of our best years ever! Our campaigns were splashed over the front pages of The Sunday Times, featured in The Observer and starred in the UK’s most watched current affairs TV programme to mention but a few. This momentum translated into significant campaign victories for surfers and waveriders all over the UK.

SAS has never rested on our laurels and we have big plans for all of our campaigns in 2011. But before we get ahead of ourselves, we thought it would be the perfect time to reflect... Read more

SAS Alarmed As Blue Flag Rewrite The Rulebook Allowing Sewage Discharges

SAS are concerned to learn that Foundation of Environmental Education (FEE) is considering rewriting the rulebook to relax regulations on sewage discharges from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). Our directors are writing to the director of FEE calling for Blue Flag beach users to be protected from raw sewage discharges and we need you to do the same. Surfers Warn Water Industry That Pride Comes Before A Fall

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) warn the water industry there’s more to be concerned about than celebrate. Today Defra will release the 2010 bathing season results for the UK and both water companies and Government agencies will be quick to boast about an increase in beaches attaining the guideline standards. Whilst trying their hardest to divert attention away from 16 beaches failing the 34 year old, inadequate and outdated water quality standards and a reduction in beaches failing to attain the bare minimum mandatory standards. SAS are urging the water industry not to believe their own press. Their achievements... Read more

Surfers Remind The Water Industry That Year Round Sewage Treatment Is Utterly Vital

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) were on hand to greet delegates at the 4th European Water and Wastewater Management Conference in Leeds, with direct reminders that turning Ultra Violet (UV) sewage treatment systems off outside the bathing season dramatically increases the health risk to surfers and waveriders. The surfers, in wetsuits and carrying surfboards emblazoned with illuminous “UV” letters handed out cards reminding the delegates of their obligations to protect water users all year round. After a successful campaign against Northumbrian Water in 2008 SAS have helped set a precedent. Where there is a presence of water users, year... Read more

It Never Rains But Pours For Scottish Bathing Waters

It Never Rains But It Pours For Scottish Bathing Waters Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are frustrated with yet another year’s shocking bathing water results for Scotland.  During the course of the 2010 Scottish bathing season 13 beaches recorded single sample failures with 4 beaches failing outright to reach bathing water standards that are 34 years old and that will soon be superseded by more stringent standards.  A double whammy of bad news for Scottish water users sees Scottish Water turn off their tertiary sewage treatment at Pease Bay, increasing the health risk for surfing at one of Scotland’s...
