Motivocean Beach Clean Dates – Update

SAS is currently working with schools, universities, youth groups and other community partners to deliver Motivocean Beach Cleans right across the UK. SAS is particularly encouraging youth volunteering and promoting the link between coastal environmental protection and the sports that rely on a clean and protected coastal environment. SAS is holding events right around the country between March 11th and 30th June 2011, offering volunteers the chance to get involved with beach clean activities and learn to surf as a reward*. The tour will be calling at many beaches around the country shown below. Unless otherwise indicated, all events will start at... Read more

Your Coastline Needs You!

Marine Planning, The Journey Starts Here What is marine planning? We see it as a fantastic opportunity to get surf and water sports areas recognised, designated and protected for generations to come. Marine planning in its simplest form will be a marine version of our land based planning systems. Sounds obvious don’t it. But it might surprise you to learn the marine environment is nautical miles behind the land based planning systems. But the good news is, SAS is involved from the very start. The newly formed Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is responsible for developing marine plans for the entire UK waters.... Read more

Your Coastline Needs You!

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) re-enacted the iconic Kitchener recruitment poster to enlist surfers, waveriders and coastal users into the Marine Management Organisation’s (MMO) new Marine Planning programme. Our surfing Kitchener stood on the frontline for SAS at the first Marine Planning workshop on the 12th of January in Peterborough. The workshops will produce a statement of public participation (SPP), outlining exactly how and when surfers, waveriders and coastal users can best engage with the Marine Planning process. Once the mechanisms and methods for engagement are in place SAS will be recruiting the entire coastal community at the key... Read more

SAS’ The Year That Was 2010

2010 saw SAS turn 20 and it was one of our best years ever! Our campaigns were splashed over the front pages of The Sunday Times, featured in The Observer and starred in the UK’s most watched current affairs TV programme to mention but a few. This momentum translated into significant campaign victories for surfers and waveriders all over the UK.

SAS has never rested on our laurels and we have big plans for all of our campaigns in 2011. But before we get ahead of ourselves, we thought it would be the perfect time to reflect... Read more

Surfers Warn Water Industry That Pride Comes Before A Fall

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) warn the water industry there’s more to be concerned about than celebrate. Today Defra will release the 2010 bathing season results for the UK and both water companies and Government agencies will be quick to boast about an increase in beaches attaining the guideline standards. Whilst trying their hardest to divert attention away from 16 beaches failing the 34 year old, inadequate and outdated water quality standards and a reduction in beaches failing to attain the bare minimum mandatory standards. SAS are urging the water industry not to believe their own press. Their achievements... Read more

SAS Celebrate As Blue Flag Commits To Sewage Warning System

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are celebrating this bank holiday Monday as Keep Britain Tidy commit to warning systems informing the public after sewage discharges on Blue Flag beaches.  This commitment is a direct response to SAS exposing over 25% of the UK’s Blue Flags as currently failing to meet the imperative Blue Flag regulations and failing to warn the public after sewage spills.  SAS are confident that next year’s Blue Flag beaches will provide beach lovers with an enhanced beach experience.  On 06/08/10 SAS raised their own brown flags on Blue Flag beaches that they believe have Combined... SAS Call For 34 Blue Flags to Be Withdrawn From Beaches Around The UK

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are calling for 34 British beaches to be stripped of their Blue Flag status. SAS have uncovered information revealing these beaches can not meet the strict standards requiring public warnings after sewage discharges set by the international body responsible for the Blue Flag programme. SAS flew their Brown Flag at Whitburn beach in the North East. Whitburn has a Blue Flag but yet the European Commission (EC) is taking the UK to the European Court of Justice for "too frequent" and "excessive" spills from storm water overflows at Whitburn. English Blue Flags not meeting the... Read more

SAS Release The WAR REPORT (Waves Are Resources)

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) landed on Fistral beach in Newquay with 2 tanks and smoking flares to mark the release their ground breaking WAR Report. The WAR report clearly highlights why Waves Are Resources and, as such, should be recognised as valuable assets, protected for this and future generations. The WAR Report not only focuses on the intrinsic value of waves to surfers but also the economic value to the wider community. Today is also the first day of the Relentless Boardmasters, the UK’s largest surfing competition. The Boardmasters is obviously solely dependent on the waves and the event bring £1,700,000 into... SAS @ The Boardmasters

Beach cleans, secret gigs & campaign awareness!
SAS will again be hosting a stand at the Relentless Boardmasters in Newquay, between 4th – 8th August. We’ll be signing up newcomers to the campaign, distributing information about all our projects and generally flying the SAS banner at the biggest surf contest in the UK. Our presence there is very helpful in influencing new individuals who might not otherwise get to hear about our ongoing campaigns.
We’ll be engaging SAS supporters & visitors to the competition with a daily beach clean.  These cleans are to highlight the growing... Read more
