The Government’s Red Tape Challenge consultation is proposing a retreat from coastal and marine protection which could abolish much of the legislation currently in place to protect our already threatened and damaged coastline – our waves, oceans and beaches. SAS is encouraging supporters to voice their concerns immediately by signing its Red Alert! petition at www.sas.org.uk/red-alert/ . These concerns must be submitted by Friday, 23rd March 2012. There is currently only limited legislation to protect our unique coastline, much of which will be weakened or abolished altogether through the Red Tape Challenge. This Government exercise seems to be putting developers... Read more

International Symposium on the Protection of Waves The protection of waves has been a growing concern for Surfers Against Sewage and other NGOs around the globe for a number of years. Although the Protect Our Waves (POW) campaign was only launched in 2009, we’ve been protecting waves from one threat or another since our conception 21 years ago. But the Protect Our Waves campaign gives us the structure to legitimately expand our remit, concentrating on wave protection like never before. Using our years of experience the POW campaign identified the most potent and widespread threats to waves around the UK. These include threats from over zealous onshore and offshore developments, surfers and waveriders right of access and of course, environmental impacts. Since 2009 the POW campaign has been incredible active and has already... Read more

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) warn the water industry there’s more to be concerned about than celebrate. Today Defra will release the 2010 bathing season results for the UK and both water companies and Government agencies will be quick to boast about an increase in beaches attaining the guideline standards. Whilst trying their hardest to divert attention away from 16 beaches failing the 34 year old, inadequate and outdated water quality standards and a reduction in beaches failing to attain the bare minimum mandatory standards. SAS are urging the water industry not to believe their own press. Their achievements... Read more

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are celebrating this bank holiday Monday as Keep Britain Tidy commit to warning systems informing the public after sewage discharges on Blue Flag beaches. This commitment is a direct response to SAS exposing over 25% of the UK’s Blue Flags as currently failing to meet the imperative Blue Flag regulations and failing to warn the public after sewage spills. SAS are confident that next year’s Blue Flag beaches will provide beach lovers with an enhanced beach experience. On 06/08/10 SAS raised their own brown flags on Blue Flag beaches that they believe have Combined... Read more

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are calling for 34 British beaches to be stripped of their Blue Flag status. SAS have uncovered information revealing these beaches can not meet the strict standards requiring public warnings after sewage discharges set by the international body responsible for the Blue Flag programme. SAS flew their Brown Flag at Whitburn beach in the North East. Whitburn has a Blue Flag but yet the European Commission (EC) is taking the UK to the European Court of Justice for "too frequent" and "excessive" spills from storm water overflows at Whitburn. English Blue Flags not meeting the... Read more

Clean water campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are relieved to announce that the Ultra Violet (UV) treatment that renders sewage clean and safe has once again been turned back on at the popular Pease Bay, in time for the Scottish Bathing Season. SAS campaigners will be opening the beach with MSP John Lamont by cutting a giant ribbon. Scottish Water turn off the UV treatment of the sewage discharged at Cove sewage treatment works sewage outside the bathing season.
