SAS’s year that was 2009

This is the last year as a teenager for Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) as next year is our 20th anniversary. Our 19th year was one of our busiest and most successful years campaigning. 2009 started with yet another shipping accident, this time our beaches were covered in timber. Let's hope we escape a serious shipping catastrophe in 2010. January and February brought a couple of campaign victories. Firstly new regulations came into force to prevent sewage discharge from ships. And after more than 20 campaign actions in Guernsey, the island finally committed to full sewage treatment! Great news for Guernsey as currently 65,000... Read more

Surfers Against Sewage call on the Prime Minister to implement a National Marine Litter Strategy

Clean water campaigners from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) believe that the UK Government urgently needs a National Marine Litter Strategy to tackle the worsening crisis of litter in our oceans and across our beaches. On the opening day of the WQS O'Neill Cold Water Classic, SAS were joined by some of the world's best surfers to call for the Prime Minister to take urgent action to increase protection levels... Marine Litter Petition

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigns target a wide range of environmental issues damaging your favourite beaches and surf spots. Marine litter is maybe the most obvious of these, something we all see too much of, too often, when we visit the beach or take to the sea. The plethora of plastics and other litter on our beaches is not only an eyesore, but also a persistent and long-lasting danger to surfers, beach users, recreational water sports enthusiasts, and the wildlife and habitats all around the UK's coastline. So what can you do about it? SAS currently organises annual nationwide beach cleaning events,... Read more
