Operation Beach Clean
A Key Stage 3 Science, English and Citizenship Resource
Operation Beach Clean stars Rip Curl professional surfers Jayce Robinson, current UK U18 No: 2 and Gisela Pulido, the 14 year old Spanish kitesurfing wonder who already has 3 world titles (Open category!) to her name.
Operation Beach Clean transforms Jayce and Gisela into the cool manga style animated characters Sandy Bottom and Crystal Clear. These Ecogroms (young surfers who care about the environment) move, walk, talk, surf and help to clean up their beaches with the guidance of Key Stage 3 Science, English and Citizenship students.
The animation follows Sandy and Crystal down to the beach for a surf. But they find their beach and waves covered in pollution. This is the introduction to the Science activities; investigating pollution, biodiversity, laboratory research, analysis statistics, producing explanatory graphs and searching the internet.
Throughout their virtual tour, they are guided by Andy, the SAS Campaigner. Andy covers the key environmental issues and provides information on who SAS are and what they do.
The English and Citizenship activities engage the students with the community and focuses on the beach clean, generating interest and support by organising a debate, designing posters and writing a targeted press release.
At the end of these fun activities the students are rewarded with a short film of the real life Sandy and Crystal surfing amazingly at their local beaches.
