The Protect Our Waves (POW) campaign officially expands SAS's campaign remit to encompass important issues close to the heart of all surfers and waveriders - protecting waves. Behind the scenes SAS has been consistently representing surfers and waveriders on rights of access, and ensuring the wave resource is recognised and valued. The POW campaign will ensure that the full force of the SAS campaign team can be thrown at issues threatening waves.
Surfing has grown into a well establish sport, culture and an important industry in the UK. However, many still wrongly perceive surfing as an unimportant sub-cultureand fail to fully respect surfers and recognize surfer's opinions, even on issues that directly affect them.
Today surfers come from all walks of life. Lawyers, doctors and businessmen sit in the line up next to tradesmen, students and groms. Surfers and waveriders make up over 1% of the UK population. A minority, but a passionate and increasingly powerful one.
Good quality surf spots and popular surfing communities help support local economies and have a positive impact on society. These benefits need to be quantified and promoted something which SAS's POW campaign is best placed to tackle.
Impacts on your surf spot can come in many forms. POW will campaign against threat from offshore and nearshore development, environmental impacts and protect surfers and waveriders rights of access.
SAS already has the reputation as a successful campaign organisation, basing campaigns on good science and promoting sustainable achievable solutions. We are feared and respected by both Government and industry and will continue with our successful campaign ethos with the POW campaign.
Surfers Against Sewage's Protect Our Waves (POW) campaign is dedicated to the protection of surf spots. POW recognises the social and economic benefits of surf spots, to both the surfing and wider communities. POW will strive to protect surf spots from unacceptable levels of environmental impact, impacts on wave quality and recreational water users right of access. SAS will use their 20 years campaign experience, expertise and contacts to ensure the POW campaign is heard at the highest levels of Government down to local decision makers. SAS will work with, and where necessary, against NGOs and developers to ensure surf spots get the protection they deserve.
